I’ve got two perfectly healthy IVF babies. Did not do PGT testing, as my dr discourages it unless you’re over 40.
I wouldn’t be concerned about this, and try not to go down the google dark path, talk to your RE if you are concerned about birth defects.
PGT is king!
There is a clinically significant study that indicates a correaltive, very slightly increased risk of heart defects in IVF babies (they don’t know if IVF causes it or the population seeking IVF inherently has a higher risk). All this meant was some additional ultrasounds early on with the MFM. At your age, you will almost certainly be referred for additional screenings with an MFM anyways. I appreciated the extra ultrasounds and it helped with my anxiety (currently have a very healthy IVF 10 month old).
Standard guidance is to recommend PGT testing for any woman over 35 (and I would have concerns about any doctor not aligning with that guidance), but the PGT testing won’t detect the heart defect issue.
Yea. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Only the right side of his heart developed. To say it was devastating would be an understatement. But I again reiterate I do not blame IVF for this at all.
I had the absolute most perfect baby ever (obviously I’m beyond biased) through IVF. I got pregnant at 40, had her at 41 with eggs that were retrieved when I was 39. Don’t get scared by Dr. Google.
PGTA testing gave me so much peace of mind throughout the pregnancy, but especially in that first trimester when most miscarriages due to birth defects happen. Best of luck.
