Has anyone ever shifted from in-house to something like trust and estates? I'm securities counsel at a pubco (former M&A and cap markets big law). Accounting/finance background as well pre-law. Curious about a transition like this. About ~10 years of working experience total (3 in accounting and 7 in law).

Can I ask why you want to shift? I thought securities counsel at a pubco is one the cushiest IHC jobs.

It's a cushy job, yes, but I'm not sure it's my true passion (not saying I don't like...I do a lot, but I've always been interesteded in the financial planning and T&E legal side). I've made enough where I could think about something like this.

I thought about something like this and also interested to hear others experience.

I want to get out of ID so badly. I don’t mind the work but the hours are just killing me. I just started at a new firm less than 6 months ago and I am already desperate to get out. It is not the firm or the people. I just hate the high billables. I have been applying to other jobs but I think I may need a recruiter for help. Any recommendation for a great recruiter in NYC?

She is currently working on an L2S which is also up for renewal. On similar terms, would her job change have any impact to her L2S renewal application, assuming it's applied and pending with USCIS by that time.

I had 4 deals die/get pushed this December, so this month was significantly slower than anticipated. Additionally, the main partner I work with has been out for months with a serious health issue. Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?
