Race to the bottom, don't even bother. I don't know anyone in my neck of the woods (US) who has tried them and could get enough work at a good enough rate to even pay rent in most cities.
The types of clients drawn to Upwork can't afford me, but even if they could, they clearly would rather aim for 60% of my quality at 25% of my rate or (way) less.
I’ve tried to use it at one point for my own work when I was dead slow. It’s very difficult to get work on there. To make it worse their algorithm forces you to buy leads from them. Essentially you pay them to boost things like your visibility, credibility and amount of leads you are allowed to pursue. Better off promoting on linked in and stalking contacts on there. I did however find a good photographer on there… but met him there then worked outside of their soulless platform and paid his proper rate for his work. Wishing you the best. Hang in. Send link to your portfolio to my DM.
What kind of work are you looking for?
Literally ANY kind of work. I’m desperately broke.
But specifically on upwork/fiverr, I’d be offering art direction, web design, branding — any kind of visual design.
I found three long term freelance clients I took off Upwork after a few months. Took 3 months doing awful paid jobs to get reviews and only get myself up to like $55 at the time. This was years ago and apparently you have to pay to even apply to jobs you were invited to do. I would not do it now. But if you’re a jr, sure.
A junior who's broke probably can't justify spending money to apply to individual jobs that may only barely be worth the pay. What an absolute racket.
You have to grind real hard and compete against people who are charging 5$ or less per hour with probably similar education and experience. Hardly any luck, very challenging, will build callus for sure.
People who are looking for quality made in the US work with great education and experience are probably not searching Upwork or Fiverr.
Better than nothing though.
