Has anyone heard of "quiet quitting"? I used to think it meant slacking off, but now I see it more as setting healthy boundaries. After years of always saying yes and spreading myself too thin, I’ve started focusing on just what I’m actually paid to do, and honestly, it’s been kind of freeing. I’m curious if anyone else has made this shift. Did it change how you’re perceived at work?

Yes! I actually did leave my last job and told myself I must have this mindset at my current job. So my current employer now only knows me to do my work and nothing else :D I tried to slowly ease off the work in my last place and I got told I wasn't performing as well anymore so I left!

Good for you for recognizing that and making a change! It’s honestly so frustrating when doing just your job is suddenly seen as underperforming, especially if you’d been going above and beyond for so long before that. Starting fresh with clear boundaries at a new job is smart!

That’s what I thought when I first heard it! After looking it up, it couldn’t seem to be farther from the truth. Everyone should be quiet quitting. Do the work that you are meant to do, and let the company figure it out if they want or need more from you.

Exactly! It’s really just doing your job as described - nothing more, nothing less. We’ve normalized overextending ourselves for so long that simply setting boundaries feels rebellious. Honestly, if everyone did it, maybe companies would start managing workloads more realistically.

I honestly think my manager is doing this. It’s not like they’ve stopped working or anything, I’ve just noticed they no longer work outside of the regular 9-5 hrs. Honestly mad respect and wish I could be more like that

Same here. I’ve noticed a few colleagues setting really clear boundaries, and it’s kind of refreshing. It’s made me rethink how much extra time I used to give without even realizing it.

This is not really the definition of quiet quitting that was really popular during 2020-2021. Quiet quitting was basically used to describe when you're remote and you stop doing your work and wait to see how long it takes to get fired. I think setting boundaries is great, but it's super different from quiet quitting

That’s a great point. The term quiet quitting definitely evolved over time. You’re right that back in 2020-2021, it often had a more negative connotation, like mentally checking out while still collecting a paycheck, especially in remote roles. But lately, it feels like people have rebranded it to mean doing only what's required, which is really more about boundaries than disengagement. Funny how the same phrase can take on totally different meanings depending on who’s using it.

I can't keep up with all the phrases these days. Whatever happened to showing up, putting your best foot forward, and helping others if your workload allows?

Totally hear you. Sometimes it feels like we're just rebranding basic professionalism with new buzzwords! I still believe in showing up, doing your best, and being a team player when you can. But I also get why some folks, including myself, have pulled back a bit. Maybe it’s just about finding that balance without needing a label for it.

I think that’s what happens when you’ve mentally left but just need to work up the courage to start looking elsewhere to find something else
