Label where everything is!!! It helps you and your students to keep your room tidy!
I totally agree, I also use pictures of the item on the labels ( for kids who can’t read or struggle with reading or language )
I’d see if they can put locks on your cabinets. Teachers with master room keys getting into our supplies is a real problem. Congratulations on the new job
How do you keep the rest of the school out of your supplies? When I became the Art Teacher I would dumpster diving for the items other teachers threw away ( got a lot of great stuff) because I was always too late to get my PO order for supplies purchased before funds ran out. Out of five years I have only gotten supplies twice. However , I can’t seem to get stocked because the rested of the school would come get things when they needed something. Some things I would get myself until my days were cut. Now, I just make what I have work.
I ran into that in my school. Took me a few year to change that culture. First priority is to get your orders in. That was a struggle for me too!
Second is to lock your supplies so people can't just slip in and take stuff. Also mention that the art dept has a budget for art curriculum just as other depts have their own budgets for curriculum and needed supplies . Good luck. It didn't get better overnight.
I’m in an old Science room as well! (Entering my 3rd year at this school) Really make it your own and utilize the wall space and open floor plan for a nice flow to your classroom procedures. My students love the natural lighting from our big windows.
I think being able to group students is best, and large tables are ideal. Then you have to consider traffic patterns, and access to sinks, etc. Important displays should be away from splashing water. Lucky you to have that storage!
I like to organize by each medium, keeping all needed things for each one in a defined area. Thinking of it as an assembly line process from start to finished product. Storage of wet paintings is still a struggle after 10 years.
