A composition notebook. I use this as our sketchbook. It’s cheap and easy to store. My students do preliminary drawings in it, reflection writing and when they finish early they draw in it.
I agree, a sketch book is a good thing! Maybe each student could have 2 glue sticks, box of colored pencils, and scissors. That should help with the basics.
Sketchbook for sure! I always give weekly sketchbook assignments so early finishers can work on those, for your middle school ages most likely. Crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, box of tissues, pencils, eraser,
My school (pre-K-4) provides a budget sufficient for art supplies, but the problem is necessities like tissues, baggies, paper towels, etc. Since I have 500 + students, I ask only one item per class.
Presuming that you have a budget for basics (ie drawing paper) for that age group I would ask for pencils, crayons (personally, I would request they get Crayola), box of markers (again-Crayola), school scissors and glue sticks. With some creativity those materials can get you through lots of meaningful lessons.
If each student would donate a skein of yarn you could end up with a adequate supply of yarn that could be used for weaving/braiding/texture projects.
I ask for composition books and we use them as our sketchbook/journal. I don't want my parents buying expensive sketchbooks. composition books are usually less than $1.

Does anyone have cool sketchbook assignments that went well? Any suggestions on books with ideas?
