Yeah, and I got politely ghosted. Nobody really has the time or bandwidth to be helping other people out for no reason. A lot of people talk about mentorship in the industry but I think the practice is mostly dead because we're so focused on billable hours.

For certain practice groups the best training is in-house/government
Yes. Lit associate reached out to white collar, which helped land current role. Note that this firm “networking” was honestly just being genuine and friendly to people. Ymmv.
In the aftermath of 2008, I was a junior associate who kind of escaped my bank finance practice by helping out a regulatory group and thereby avoided getting laid off. I ended up preferring the regulatory partners I worked with, but when Finance work picked up (late 2009-2010), I was basically told I had no choice but to rejoin this group and work with a young, insecure junior partner that I strongly disliked by that time.
I then, unsuccessfully, tried to switch to yet another group (securities litigation). All conversations were 100% positive until the very end, when someone at partner leadership level vetoed the move. I never figured out whether that was Security Reg leadership reticence to take on another junior associate, or leadership in Finance desperately trying to keep unhappy associate that clearly did not like the junior partner I was assigned to work with.
At that point my time at the firm was likely numbered, but I quit and moved cities before any of that could or would go down.
My advice: def seek out new, interesting opportunities that interest you. But if you think your own firm or partners are snakes or insecure, have that backup exit plan ready.
I tried and got some BD work (writing client alert that type of thing). They might bring me on later I think but I left the firm. Doesn’t hurt to try!
Yes
In my case, leader in other group was open to it and liked my initiative. My group leader was pissed, said no, and I left the firm a few months later.
I exposed myself to partners daily. And then I had a little talk with HR ..
That you, Jeffrey?
Yes and help is generally well-received
Yes. We spoke for an hour about his practice and how I could get involved and then I decided that I had no interest.
