From the UX writers I've spoken to, they all started with just falling into it. Learn as you go. As long as you can write, you can probably pick it up pretty quickly. Just need someone to give you a shot. Or start freelance to show what you can do before getting hired. With the UX writer I've worked with, it seems like it's a lot more left brain technical writing. So we prepared for that. It's not as fun as being creative.
I also agree with SC1. UX writing is pretty bland enough, it'll be covered by AI pretty soon. Doing stuff AI can't (or at least very well) is probably where the work will be.
Haven't done it but I've looked into it quite a bit. Have you worked with UX designers directly? Did you get any portfolio work that shows you can write copy for CTA buttons, etc? Websites, apps.
You'll also have the best luck if you actually know folks in tech, specifically UXers.
Last thing: I know the salaries seem enticing, but I'm skeptical about the longterm viability of those jobs. UX writers have been hit pretty hard too, and I wouldn't be surprised if those duties get consolidated into other roles, at least for the next couple of years. But maybe permanently.
I’ve needed to do UX writing a lot in my regular CW job, as do my juniors (expected of them), and honestly don’t know how it’s an actual feasible job. You’re throwing yourself into the lay-off category by only doing it.
