Has going “above and beyond” at work ever backfired on you?

All it does is get me more work, lol. Every time I suggest an initiative or process improvement, it becomes my problem for the next few months.

100% every time. It’s better to just do the work they give you well. Meet expectations, don’t exceed them.

I used to help everyone with their own work, but then it reached the point where I was in burnout, and as soon as I stopped "helping", I was called out for not being a team player and for being lazy.

Have you been through anything similar? Perhaps a few more tips would be good for me.

Yes. The above and beyond became my baseline, so when I stepped back to normal, I was now falling behind. It can put you in a good position, just tread carefully.

For yourself or for the false premise that it's what you can keep accomplishing is not sustainable for me.

No, I went above and beyond in two ways:

1/ On the work that got made:
I created high-quality work that directly advanced my career, leading to awards, promotions, and raises.

2/ On pitches or work that didn’t get made: Even when the work didn’t launch, it earned me internal recognition and helped me build a strong network of people who advocate for me across agencies, people who respect my work and would vouch for me.

If you consistently phone it in, you’ll eventually feel it, and so will your career.

Btw: “Going above and beyond” doesn’t mean I don’t have a personal life.

Work-life balance isn’t always about strict boundaries. Sometimes, going above and beyond has actually earned me more freedom.

Putting in extra time early on led to some of the best work of my career, work that got noticed, won awards, and helped me build trust. That trust has given me more flexibility: I can be selective about the projects I take on, work hard when it matters, and ease off when it doesn’t, as long as I deliver.

Ironically, those moments of overtime gave me the kind of work that gave me status and credibility to shape a more balanced life. If I had left every day at 5 p.m. as a junior “on principle,” I don’t think I’d have the skills that would govern me the same freedom I enjoy now.

Yes.

Yes it actually has. Because I was willing to go above and beyond my coworkers were able to slack and my boss came to me to clean up their messes. I basically became way too relied upon.

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.

Should all the on-site interviews have a feedback of "hire/ strong hire" in order to proceed to HC?
What if one of rounds was not up to the mark?

I just completed the interview process at CGI, the HR called thereafter saying that I've cleared all the rounds and they'd like to give me an offer. They also sent a couple of mails for required documents. But I am yet to receive the offer letter, is this usual?

Don’t get scammed. I saw an ad for vending machines that dispense hot coffee, from The Caffeine Dream. Sounds like a cool idea, and they offered placement of the machines for a one time fee. but I asked this “Chris Mateli” where. He was evasive at first and was rude when I had someone with my company call to ask. Eventually he gave me the locations before buying the machines which, of course, I couldn’t verify for placement. They had no idea about these machines because they never ordered them.

I’m a junior in big law and in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that counsels produce perfect drafts and yet aren’t partners but partners can’t write two sentences without numerous typos. Shouldn’t counsels be partners and partners counsels instead?

If there is a case that we have to quarantine again. Do you all think it is possible for store associates to work remotely? If so, what are some ways this could work? I fear another pandemic or outbreak and so many people being out of work again. I can't even fathom those that had jobs in retail that had little to no choice to not be remote.
