I did this for each or my kids around that age. I did a “mock trial” and gave all the kids parts. Anyone that didn’t have specific role (I had a team of prosecutors, team of defense attorneys, witnesses - and made my kid the judge) was in the jury. I scripted out a “trial” around Goldilocks and three bears. It went great every time and my kids still talk about it even as teenagers.
Pictures with your speech. Have your best suit, looks matter and kids are so impressionable! And perhaps a gift, calendar and/or pencils/pens.
Could also just get the firm branded stuff. My godchildren love all of it.
Rising Star
Being a lawyer is already just as glamorized as being a doctor. Kids don’t need more of that. They need candid feedback about the positives, but also the student loan debt, the three extra years of schooling, the fact that most lawyers aren’t the romanticized and rich versions they see on tv, etc. It’s a disservice to try and “inspire” them to be lawyers when that really isn’t the right path for everyone. The last thing we need is more morose people in our profession because no one was willing to be honest with them about the downsides before they made the commitment.
You have a point! Just a thought to walk in there with your paralegal as well. You can seriously say.. guys focus on finding what you love to do and do that. Be your best!!
Examples of the wide array of problems that lawyers help with from family issues to criminal to huge companies to environmental to free speech to employment.
My dad did this for my 4th grade class. He was a DA and told stories about his gnarliest murder cases. I represent HOAs and I have some wacky stories but they’re mostly about homeowners poisoning trees to protect their views or painting murals on their garages or building catios to annoy their neighbors.
I think you should highlight the fun and zany parts of your job. 8-9 year olds like dramatics.
Tort cases with interesting facts! I still remember a case from my torts class where there was a mouse baked into a loaf of bread lol. Kids that age like that kind of stuff
They will want to know how much you earn.
I did this for years through the Justice Association. They may have materials for you to borrow. I thought an overview of our constitutional rights, including the right to counsel, was very impactful.
make yourself a superhero in the story with the power of justice and law!
good luck
Maybe focus on one particular facet, whether that's contracts, the Constitution, property disputes, or something else that you know best. Make up a silly song, or borrow from Schoolhouse Rock. Mention something involving a very big number. Ask questions.
Good stories and snacks. I literally decided to go to law school after a lawyer came to talk to my 6th grade class for Career Day. He worked for DOJ and gave us these little pens lol
