Hello lovely people. I need your recommendation. I have decided to reward myself for my accomplishments (paying student loans, supporting parents, past promo’s etc) by buying my 1st luxury watch on my 30th this year. Budget 10-12k.

What would you recommend me to get? I was thinking a two tone Datejust or a pair like (omega/Cartier/JJL)

Really excited to hear your recs! Thank you! 😊

Speedy always a good choice as first watch

Thanks M1. How should one even choose? Should I just walk in a store and buy the one I like or hunt for used models on places like crown and caliber?

Check out a ton of different brands in person and when you’re done get a Grand Seiko.
That is what I did and for me the Grand Seikos were the watch that I most reliably said “wow” to when seeing in the metal and handling. I like a lot of different watches, luxury and Microbrand, but when I’d browse stores or friends collections I’d always come back to Grand Seiko.
I think more and more people are coming to the same conclusions because the new models and LEs are becoming difficult to get. The popular LEs are trading at significant markups secondhand (check out listings for the SBGH267/269 for instance) and I am hoping the same happens with this watch (though I love it and don’t want to sell).

D1, I hope he doesn’t! I’d love to be able to afford one someday haha...

I would try them all on and see which one ‘speaks’ to you. It’s most likely going to be an ongoing hobby, so I’d pick something more versatile than TT DJ.

like

This makes sense. I think the TT DJ can wait and I can start small. I definitely want to educate myself more and build a 7-8 watch collection.

Definitely go try on a bunch, and don’t be swayed by the sales person.

I like to recommend a robust, versatile watch for a first luxury piece. Something automatic, stainless steel, at least 50M water resistance, and with a bracelet.

What size is your wrist? That’ll be a big factor on what to recommend.

like

Haha fair enough D3. Thank you!

like

Cartier santos. You can easily switch between bracelet or strap so it’s very versatile

like

Thanks M2 I like the Santos. I might make it my third or fourth piece! 😋

like

Good for you, and congrats.
I don’t think you’ll ever regret a Rolex, Cartier, or JLC.
Rolex is obviously a challenge to get your hands on, but ignoring that for recos, I love the ND Sub, Explorer 1, and Sea-Dweller 43. The SD43 shouldn’t be too long of a wait.

At Cartier I think the Tank Americaine is the way to go. The santos is also a classic that’s only going to get harder to get. They seem to be appreciating.

At JLC, the move is the Reverso or Master.

like

Great recommendations. Thank you! I love the Tank Solo and JLC reverso. Might end up getting one of each

Omega Seamaster /or Speedy would be my top picks for a first lux watch. Versatile, durable, robust movements, good proportions, lots of great dial colors/variations and very good value for money. You get get them both for <12k from an AD with no wait time

like

Consider a Cartier tank :) very smart - can be dressed up or down plus v v timeless.

Out of the two - I would go with a datejust

Haha will do C1!

Great recommendations!! Thank you all!! A lot to think and process here. Haha I will return here to ask for tips on “where and how to buy” once I have made up my mind.

I recently accepted a position with a new org. One of the benefits I asked about with offer was the parental leave policy and was told (in writing by HR) 16 weeks paid after 1 year, which is as good as you can hope for in US. Now I’ve been sent the employee handbook to review/sign and it says only 12 weeks, which is less than the org I’m leaving. What might my recourses be to negotiate 16 weeks when the time comes? Also, should I be viewing this is a red flag?

Just landed a full time gig, looking to get some furniture so I’m not working on my parents’ kitchen table during this remote period. Any recommendations for desks and chairs? I’m hoping to find something that’s easy to assemble and break down for when I need to move, and something that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

I know everyone has a different kind of setup that works for them. I currently have a laptop, drawing pad, second monitor, and a desk riser.

Trying to level set expectations...are final round interviews more of a gut check to see if you're the right person for the position? Just trying to understand what % of final rounds are successful lol.

What’s the best thing I could buy for my old man’s birthday for about $10k? Would go Rolex (since he knows Rolex) but would prefer new, which limits my options there. Looking for something a little sporty, with a bracelet, and waterproof (100m should suffice). Nothing bombastic like a Panerai, but something a little more exciting than say a Datejust? And not Grand Seiko - he’s gonna think it’s like $50 and lose it :(

New addition to the collection. Datejust 41 with Blue Matrix dial. Comfortable everyday piece.

I just saw that a Hubler watch given to Hitler sold at auction for $1.1 million. It is an interesting watch (despicable as the recipient of said watch was), but it got me thinking about a larger question: does anyone here collect watches owned by the famous (or infamous)?

like

My in-laws used to own a jewelry store, and they had this Omega quartz watch in their storage. I can understand why this wasn’t sold during their clearance sale lol. I had no idea Omega made stuff like this in 1987! I guess they couldn’t help it after the rise of quartz watches in the 70s to 80s. I doubt they’re worth anything even to this day. I see them on eBay for $700-1200, so who knows…
