You are bold. I aspire to achieve your level of confidence
Finding remote positions can be difficult these days. The attitude toward remote work in corporate America has becoming fairly hostile. You have celebrity CEOs doing interviews denouncing remote work and that's all you need to get a lot of other managers to turn against it. Those positions have become scarce, and the competition for them is intense. You should definitely look, but you may need to adjust your expectations at some point.
If your move is required for a partner or spouses work, family life, etc then I would lead with that. They might be more flexible if it’s slightly out of your control. If this is a personal preference and moving just to move then I’d expect them to say no and not negotiate past there.
You mentioned that you are exploring other opportunities that provide you that flexibility. If you have an offer in hand that you would seriously take then share what those details look like. Do not flaunt an opp that you don’t have! So many people do this and it backfires.
Look at the cost of living in your current location and the cost of living in your new location through an online calculator. Look up median salaries for your role in this new location and use that as a point of comparison in your conversation with your current employer.
Overall if your company isn’t using a location-based salary tool to hire in just be happy with a fully remote role request over a comp adjustment. Hoping it all works out for you!
