I’m job hunting in Los Angeles, looking at a variety of titles (HRBP, Sr. HRBP, Manager, Sr. Manager, Director). I have 8 YOE and my SHRM-SCP. I reached my report limit on payscale.com, so I used a variety of other sites to price the roles (BLS, salary.com, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Robert Half). The problem I’m having is the huge inconsistencies between sources (there are $40k differences between some of the identified medians). (Continued…)

This seems like a pretty standard question.
A pretty akward question too.
That’s more an habit than a norm here.
It depends, usually answering is a bad move but sometimes it’s interesting to do so.
Most of the time the question how much do you want.
Recruiters asking for how much you had before are out of this earth… you don’t ask people how much they earn out of the blue. That’s rude.
One more thing, recruiters will not have the power to sign you. Bypass them in such case.
And btw if you ask for more than the budget but still being a good or exceptional fit, they should go fight in trenches for it.
So, good recruiters are on your side.
If you are to give a number, give a higher number and not a range.
One last thing, have you considered management consulting? You should.
