Hi. I am in tax public accounting at a 30 person firm. We are small but mighty. My pay is 95k, fully remote, 4k in bonuses. I’m an EA, CFE. 5 years experience. No review experience (firm is too small to move up. I have so many managers) I love the remote but can’t help but feel like I’m wasting my time. My husband and I are about to start trying for a family next year so this is why I stay at my remote job. What would someone with my level of experience be making? Also, I am a cpa candidate.

Seems reasonable to me for no CPA and no review experience, and fully emote. Experiences seniors in M/LCOL big 4 are probably barely breaking 100k and they’re in office + have plenty review experience.

Most people can get more $$$ for changing jobs, but you’re not egregiously underpaid. Small firms that have good people and good clients are harder and harder to find these days. I also think “too small to move up” can be short sited, and if you’re serious about moving up, talk to the partners about it. Small firms have different structures than large firms. I’ve seen partners who still prepare some tax returns and don’t review any. Getting the client relationships and mastering your clients is more important than your role in the tax prep / review processes.

This is very competitive. If you are looking to have a baby soon, I would not switch jobs.

Honestly if you have no review experience the 5 years doesn’t matter. Your pay seems reasonable.

OP, it seems like you are well compensated in your circumstances. You are a fully-remote tax preparer, not yet certified, in South Florida. Unless you work an incredibly high amount of chargeable hours, I think you are doing better than most.

That's seems like decent pay.

This is incredibly competitive. I’m similar YOE and COL. I’m a CPA with review experience, and you’re paid 15k higher than me. My firm is much bigger too. I’d stay put.

helpful

5 YOE equates to 150k base comp in public, you also have EA so don’t sell yourself short.

5 years as a staff is still a staff. 95k in a MCOL market is pretty good for a staff. Comparing them to a VCOL manager is meaningless.

Small Firm Question:
Working PA for the first time this year. Doing a lot of returns right now.

History of my firm: small (7 employees, two interns), was a single CPA show for 20 years. Cont.

Through a lot of comp discussions I heard a lot of talk of “making you whole” when things get better. Am I drinking the kool-aid by believing this? Is this just meant to prevent further questions that the firm does not know the answer to?
