Drive everywhere and go to most neighborhoods to figure out what your vibe is. Driving around will give you a sense of how far things are / traffic which imo is the worse part of living in la. Also the people is the second worst - not sure how you can gauge that though.
Aside from that la is amazing and if you’re thinking about it, I recommend! Moved from dc but then left for nyc
Sherman oaks good too if you don’t mind the Burbank airport as someone below mentioned, however flight options will be limited
Figure out where you want to work if you move here and start there. You don’t want to commute, driving in LA traffic is a hellscape.
I want to do work
There are multiple airports in LA, not just LAX so don't limit yourself to that side of town. If you are really considering a move and the real LA, as a lifelong Angeleno I highly suggest considering anything east of downtown.

I’ve lived in LA for 30+ adult years and I would not live E of downtown except to the north side along the 210. I moved to LA and lived in Culver City, then to Sherman Oaks, then to Santa Clarita. The communities along the 10/60 east of downtown town all seem very dense with no green space.
Pasadena is a great spot to explore! Silverlake is great too.

Check out Manhattan Beach. Fun place to visit and live. Great sense of community. Moved there from Connecticut and loved it there. I commuted to downtown from Manhattan Beach (20 miles). Very Close to LAX (5 miles) and very safe. Has its own police and fire departments. Great schools. Expensive but a great place to live. Also any of the beach cities (Hermosa, Redondo or Palos Verdes) are great too.
We have a small condo (900 sq ft) near downtown about six blocks from the beach. MB real estate is about $1300 per square foot. We put enough money down to avoid a jumbo loan. We got a conventional Mortgage and payment is about $4000 @3 1/4. Mortgage payment is less than some of the rents in the building
