I would never ask that question and as a candidate I wouldn’t answer it either. I recommend reframing. My current company has been great, now I’m looking for…. In the case of having been laid off. You’re in the same boat as hundreds of thousands of other candidates. Being laid off doesn’t carry the stigma in 2024 that it did in 2020. I’d be honest.

Oh awesome! Also, just another thought. Letting them know your company is going through lay offs I think would give them too much information, now that I think about it. It gives them a reason to lowball you when they present an offer because they know the candidate is desperate to leave their job in fear of being part of the lay off.
My colleague says he asks himself “am I enjoying what I do, am I learning, and am I challenged” and when the answer is no he knows it’s time to move on. I think this is a fine answer. You’re grateful for your time at the company and all you accomplished, but you’ve learned all you can and it’s time to move on to new challenges.
Thanks for your contribution. Both views makes sense.

Just say you are looking for more opportunities that will help you grow in your career and you feel this new opportunity can help you achieve that. You don’t need to give too many details about your current job. And definitely never talk bad about your current employer. Just makes you look bad when you do.
