Hot take: “professionalism” is sometimes used to silence discomfort. I was told to be professional instead of being heard. How do you interpret that word now?

Depends ....what is it that you said ?

That’s a fair question. It wasn’t one specific statement, but a pattern where asking for clarity or raising concerns was met with “be professional” instead of discussion. For me, that’s where the disconnect showed up.

I would need a little bit more information as I'm not sure about the situation however reading it at face value it seems like your thoughts are being dismissed and he/she doesn't want to hear what you have to say-which seems unprofessional on their part.

I would suggest letting he/she finish what they have to say before you reply. If you sense they are not open to any more discussion, keep silent. You know what type of environment you're dealing with, and it doesn't sound like a person that practices open communication.

I appreciate you saying that. That’s exactly what I was trying to name. When “professionalism” shuts down dialogue instead of supporting it, something’s already off.

I agree on this with you

Agreed. It shouldn’t happen, yet it still does far too often. That disconnect between how things should work and how they actually play out is telling.

Maybe instead of objecting or talking to hear yourself talk, just be silent. Listen to everything and observe the audience first. Keep the questions until the end and then state the facts and or questions, short and succinct. Just my thoughts with limited info and context.

Absolutely it should not happen but it still happens in my circle and I've been around a long time just saying

I agree

Sometimes be professional just means be professional. But you are right, it is also one of the many terms used to manipulate employees into silence, especially women.

Yes, that distinction really matters. Professionalism should mean respect and accountability, not silence. When it’s selectively enforced, it becomes a control tool instead.

I’m looking for a new job!! It has been impossible to build a good relationship with my manager, he isn’t transparent with me and never provides any constructive feedback so I have no idea how I’m performing. I recently asked for a raise since I completed all my assigned projects for this year plus a few that I took on due to resignations and was denied with no reason. I’m so checked out and looking for a new job and manager that I can learn from and will help me grow, any help is appreciated!

Are there certain firms that are more accepting of Tax backgrounds entering advisory positions? I’m a CPA with a couple years regional tax experience looking to transition to advisory/deals, but have struggled getting big 4 advisory interviews even with solid recommendations.
I’ve heard there’s solid opportunities in advisory type work for some other large firms outside big 4. Has anybody made a similar transition?

Currently in sales. 26. Take extreme pride in my work and the effort I put into it. I know it sounds like a greedy millennial, but I feel very underpaid and undervalued. I am competitive and have been successful in sales. Looking for my next step in my career. Ideally remote. Any suggestions? Have been applying but haven’t been getting much action back. Thanks

I love the mostly-affordable mid engine sports car trend that’s happening. The emira is awesome and the price point is right. I’d love to see Maserati redo the gran turismo to compete with this, same with other manufacturers.

Hello Everyone,

I have received offer letter from Optum Global Solutions India recently and I am seriously considering joining it(I also have offers from Deloitte USI and Verizon).
My breakup annexure mentions 4 components apart from RRP and PF. Basic, HRA, Flexi, Special Allowance. Either the Special Allowance or the Flexi is not included in the CTC mentioned in offer letter. So I want to understand how the Flexi and Special Allowance are paid monthly. Can someone please help?
