How can I lower my manager’s expectations back down to reality? He’s dreaming of finding these magical unicorn candidates who come with senior-level skills and knowledge, but who are willing to accept a junior-level salary. He would also prefer it if these candidates came in ready to hit the ground running with little to no training. Listen, it would be amazing if these kinds of candidates existed, but I understand the difference between reality and fantasy.

Show him the salaries your competitors are offering for similar positions. Make it clear to him that what he's offering is not competitive on the open market, and that if he's adamant on not increasing the salary range, he needs to temper his expectations. It's a rough job market right now and people are desperate for work, but they're going to draw the line somewhere. Don't even get me started on the "little to no training" bit.

I would imagine that after making 3-4 offers and having no success with the candidates would probably help you make your case that what you're offering is not good enough for the kinds of candidates you're looking for. Try it your manager's way for a little bit and then present the evidence that it's not working.

There are a lot of management types who may be educated in management, but it's like they were raised to do it in a test tube. You're right about them just not being in touch with reality. If you want talented workers you have to pay for them, that's just reality.

Also bring him actual junior level candidates, then show him one that's a higher level so the higher candidate looks amazing in comparison. Everything is comparitive.

C’mon man, don’t give people hope of getting hired just to make someone else look better by comparison.

That’s a dick move.

If its a salary issue, show them a 2 candidates he wants and their comp and 2 candidates your can afford and show the differences. Then ask if he wants to upgrade the position or downgrade the requirements?

If its a that person doesn't exist issue, do a live search in front of them and show them how quickly is dwindles to 0, then you can directly ask can we drop X or Y?

I agree with HRG1. Show him what competitors pay for the skill level and experience your manager expects and explain that people who have those skills and that experience will never accept pay that low if they know the market pays more. They will go to the company who is willing to provide fair pay.

oh man! that's tough, sorry that you're dealing with this

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
