How do some of you do it?
I'm only 14 months in my current position at a private company that is very busy and I'm ready to quit. Every department in finance is under staffed and over worked, yet some of these employees have been there 10+ years. If I didn't have bills, I'd give my 2 weeks, bail, and figure out the next job on the fly. Why do people put up with being treated so poorly and bombarded with work constantly? It will never get better if people keep bowing down to the overlords.

In the early days of an accountant’s career you do pay the price by doing a lot of the grunt work. More often than not it is not the case of being understaffed. It is more the case of poor design and execution.

Properly designed workflow processes and systems enables staff to do things better and more efficiently. When everyone in the chain does what they are charged to do it is not bad. As an accountant, part of the challenge coming into the role is to design and develop your processes that works best for you.

In a good team, everything works like clockwork. There will be peaks and valleys but never a continuous peak.

Early days in my career it was not unheard of to be working after hours, weekends and holidays (Christmas, New Years, and every other holiday you could imagine). With improvements and better way to handle things it is minimal. No working through holidays, weekends and after hours.

Things do improve over time. Sticking with something and improving the environment is the most important lesson for a young person in the field. It will make you stand out above others.

Unfortunately, accountants are overworked a lot even in the industry. Have over 18yrs exp in industry and saw that a lot. Good luck to find a place 8-5pm or 9-6pm. I never saw it

Currently an assurance senior 3 at EY (promoting to manager in Oct). Want to get insight or anyone who made transfer from one big 4 to another. Was it worth it? What’s the bump in salary? How hard was the transition for you (new terminology, tech, firm culture, etc)? Don’t want to think the grass is always greener on the other side, but I’ve seen so many people made the move to EY from other big 4 and they make much more than I do because of the switch (same city same service line same level).
