Everyone deserves representation. Debts need to be repaid for society to function. Do whatever good you can. 🤷♀️
It feels bad. I am actively planning a public interest exit. Working day and night so these rich assholes pay like an effective 12% tax rate does not align with my values and the "everyone needs representation" is BS when poor ppl who get audited by the IRS and get called welfare queens are not getting the level of represntation. I'm doing it to put a roof over my poor immigrant family because we do all live under capitalism. I'm not talented enough at the self-justifying cognitive dissonance many others seem capale of.
I work in employment law representing employers. Can be hard when there is clearly discrimination and retaliation.
I get that. As an associate, I don’t get much opportunity to make those decisions. I’m learning a lot though

It's not morally bad. If people don't pay their bills and aren't held accountable then others lose their jobs.

I did residential foreclosures for 8 years, including during the Great Recession. 2,000 homes per month came thru my department. The way I thought about it was that I was there moving the paperwork along so the system kept operating, and I was there as a resource for the people who could be saved. There are only a few stories that stick with me, but all of them are wild stories of people who shouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place, for whatever reason. I was able to help them navigate a complicated system and got them real help to save their homes.
I work in family law. I try to remind myself often that it’s just a job. I also volunteer and donate money to try to improve my karma lol
Morally bad … Is it morally right to represent a large corporation make more money from many people who just make enough to live life? Is it morally right to represent a small guy take on the large corporation and get rich? Where do you draw the line?
Is it morally ok to do “public interest law” if it also leads to job losses at a corporation?
Trolly switching problem.
Is it morally ok to kill one person to save five? Would you make that switch? Are you a killer because you made the choice to save five and kill one? Or are you a killer of five if you fail to switch and one person survived?
Morals are a sliding scale. If you think you control more than a few moves on the chessboard of life, you are going to be disappointed with life. Focus on your present. Focus on the very best you can do in the moment. That is your duty. The rest will fall into place.
These industries are going to exist whether any one of us works there or not. Walmart is always going to have lawyers. The key is making sure that you yourself conduct yourself morally and ethically, because in doing so, you are making that client/industry/firm more ethical/moral. The only way those industries will change is if they reach a critical mass of morally/ethically upright people, and you’re contributing to that. It’s all you can do 🤷🏻♂️
