Keeping a clean list of what you’re working on and its impact and effort at a high level is important. Then you can communicate easily the relative priority and “why” of your work.
Yeah, this is great!
Keep quantitative business value tied to each feature. Make it objective, not subjective
Show them what’s been prioritized and make THEM pick what goes back into the backlog
The never ending battle. I try to give choices. No feature should be urgent in the first place, but we also know any last minute work will not be thought out and will have consequences. Last minute bug fix, maybe. Features?!
Pushback:
- critically analyze the super urgent thing. Is it really super urgent?
-Make management aware of what they are giving up?
This is an integral, inescapable part of being a PM. Everyone will want everything. It's your job to navigate the politics of making sure the right stuff happens.
Or you roll with the chaos and switch to 1 week sprints or scrumban but really protect the team so work is reprioritized rather than added. All requests must be logged as “work” so the team gets credit for random requests.
This is such a constant battle
