One of my junior associates recently resigned and I've been trying to make an exit myself for several months now. The job market has been really competitive but I am getting closer to getting a new job and moving on. The firm culture isn't great and work-life balance is non existent. My physical and mental health have been suffering, so I really don't think I could stay. How did you avoid the guilt trips from Partners/Senior staff trying to get you to stay?

In the moment, be respectful and listen to them but ignore the substance. It’s your life! You have to advocate for yourself. No offense, but we are all replaceable at work. They’ll be fine.

likefunny

Echo this. They wouldn’t hesitate to lay you off if it was in their best interest. Reverse is also true - do you!

Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries.

Hear them out, but remember: you can't please everyone. At the end of your journey, do you want to look back and think "I'm glad I made those partners happy" or do you want to think "I'm content."

Be content.

You may not be able to avoid their guilt trips, but you can definitely ignore them.

like

There’s really no way to avoid it because some people are going to try to guilt you no matter what you do. Best thing to do is to focus on not taking responsibility for their feelings. They can be disappointed/annoyed/upset etc., but it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong or are making the wrong choice.

Yeah, I've tried that approach, but it's been made clear to me it's not an option.

Hello All,

Received the offer from EY for M role, on call and email on Wednesday and also received a mail from the partner about it. Told them I will be accepting the offer. Had another offer & already received their contract , now I don't want to say no to the other firm before I sign the contract with EY. Which I am being told will only be ready next week. What is your experience after getting a confirmation on mail, how long could it take ?

I cleared tech and delivery mgr rounds.
I had a hr round and her budget is 11 lpa.
I told her have 13 lpa pipeline already and wish 14 lpa.
She said "I have not seen the world. Only 20 percent ppl go beyond money, rest look for WLB, job security, learning."
Okay, so my thoughts are from where she got that stats - 20 percent really ?
I beleive HRs are also subset of that 20 percent, bdw I don't mind saying am a elite subset of the 20 percent looking for better salaries. What's wrong in asking ?

What is the benefit of working at the Cook County State's Attorneys Office other than the rapid trial experience one gains? I was a non traditional student - I do have a job lined up in private practice. Im not particularly fond of the practice area but its decent paying for entry level. I attended a networking event and met so many State's attorneys who seemed to enjoy the work bc of the experience they were gaining.

Sort of feel its a job more geared to folks who never worked in law before.

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

I’m a fifth year associate who is ready to get out of litigation (and private practice altogether). I’ve only ever done professional malpractice (legal, med mal, etc) and feel like those skills will not transfer as well if I had done transactional work. Ideally I would like to transition to something in-house. Any suggestions as to what jobs/industries I could transfer into with only litigation experience?

I have been a practicing (patent prosecution) lawyer in different firms for about 20 years. I would love to do something more creative but still techie (computers, telecom, apps, etc.). I've always been interested in improving the software that practicing lawyers use (whether patent-specific or not). I am also kind of an academic at heart, but I live in a locale where professorial jobs are pretty limited and we're rooted here now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here
