I address this right away….in a cover letter and verbally. I’ve owned my own business and have been in senior roles in 3 different business sectors. So I say something like,
While my experience might suggest I’m overqualified, it actually reflects my commitment to continuous learning and my enthusiasm for taking on new challenges—particularly in a different sector or in an entry level position. Starting in entry-level roles has consistently deepened my appreciation for the organizations I’ve joined, providing valuable insight into how each role supports the broader mission. It is this perspective that has strengthened both my loyalty and motivation to grow within a company over the long term.
That's always going to be an obstacle. You could try to make the case that you really want the job for some specific reason, like you want to work for that company, or something about the work fascinates you. It's always going to be a problem, however, as companies know the track record of overqualified people who can't wait to leave for something better.
Be up front and address it. Why you aren’t a good fit for those more senior roles and why you are a good fit for these. It might put you in a more vulnerable position, but you know why they are concerned. Just talk about it.
How do they seem when you give your reasoning?
