How do you cope when a workplace praises “team players” but uses that language to pressure people into overworking? Where do you draw the line?

Everyone will have their own boundaries. And I have seen both. The over achiever that volunteers for every nonsense assignment. Working 60 plus hours as a salaried employee. Missing life events with family. And the one that pushes back and is seen as the one who doesn’t have the passion or the drive to be successful. And either of them will get laid off at a moments notice. Companies no longer care about passion and dedication. It’s up to them. They are the overlords who decide who stays and who goes and they will cut either or both positions with zest and vigor.

That said, i also have , over the course of my career, played both roles myself.

The boundaries one where I spent guilt free time with my kids and family when they needed me the most has paid me back in ways that promotions and more money never could.

When you are no longer on this earth your kids will remember that you were at their (insert event) or you were too busy “working”. And that will get pulled forward to the next generation.

Show up for them not the job.

Very true, thanks for your thoughts on this!

Is everyone pitching in extra? Or are some expected to make up for the lack of effort of others? If being part of the “team” means scarifying your physical, mental, or emotional health…that’s not a team. The “coach” is supposed to care about the people as a whole.

Tell them “work-life balance”

True! I think they’d just shrug and tell me to get on with it though

If you set the boundary early it’s easier to maintain, bare minimum pay for a role equals bare minimum work for the role (making sure I’m doing what is required but nothing extra). If you don’t set this boundary upfront they will keep moving the finish line on you. If they want more they can pay more

I think that’s a good way to fix it!

I’ve worked in sales for 12 years (8 years retail sales and management, 4 years inside tech sales and management). I’m feeling the burn and looking for something else in the tech field. I’m making $140k. I have a college degree but no marketing, engineering, or product experience. What other departments/jobs could I jump to and still keep close to my OTE? I’m pretty good at Salesforce and have thought about a SFDC admin type role, but that’s all I’ve thought of so far.

How do you identify potentials in people?

I have recently received an offer from HSBC for Data Engineer profile. The designation offered is Senior Analyst- Information Management. They said that it is a techno functional role. Does anyone have an idea about what techno functional role actually is in HSBC? Is it more like a Business Analyst? My prior experience is completely in Technical side. Will this role be suitable for me?

Any suggestion is highly appreciated. Thank you.

My head is beginning to not hurt and that worries me. I am used to banging it against a wall the entire day (theoretically). I work with people that I struggle to communicate with and/or they are extremely uneducated about various things that I used to think were the basics. I grew up poor and paid for everything myself; Money drives me. Where do I even begin to look to know what I should be doing?Sales is too easy, I need a challenge. I am good at inventing solutions. Ideas?
