Also in regulatory compliance. I just say I work with X types of companies to help them avoid getting into trouble in the first place, and help them effectively resolve problems when they're discovered or the government investigates. Throw in a sentence about how I also do some transactional work when one company is looking to buy another, largely to make sure there are no skeletons in the closet, and that about sums it up so a middle schooler could understand.
Well let’s start with what you actually do?
I write wills and trusts. That usually shuts down conversations.
Regulatory compliance sounds super easy to explain to non-lawyers. Why not just say “I make sure my clients’ businesses operate within the bounds of the law?”
For instance, in a corporate lawyer with a heavy M&A practice. So I just tell people “I help people make deals, mostly buy and sell companies.” No need to over complicate it.
“I’m a patent attorney” thankfully very few people have further questions
I represent banks and funds when they loan money to people to buy or build office buildings, hotels, apartment buildings etc.
If you want me to help put a mortgage on a hotel, I am happy to, but CRE lawyers know surprising little about NYC residential real estate. I have for sure reviewed a few leases for friends over the years though.
And it doesn’t stop people from asking for advice on random topics like mat law, criminal law, recently federal obstruction charges re: ICE. I think they think we know everything! We usually do know more than they do.
I jokingly say that I am an ambulance chaser; everyone gets that joke. For the most part, I think everyone knows what I do. I think I would have a harder time explaining your position to normal people, haha.
