Talking about pay shouldn’t be a taboo! Sharing can really help us all feel more fair about things. We’re all in the same boat!
I agree. I walked out on a manager that was so incompetent and made sure all same level coworkers knew what i was making before i left so they knew their worth hahahaha
I think it can be rude. my salary is my business. But if you wanna know an appropriate pay range, I might talk to you about that it’s especially hard if you’re direct directly working with somebody because if they find out you’re making double or more than them an hour. They’re gonna be insulted, but maybe they didn’t earn it. Maybe they don’t have as much experience. Maybe they aren’t as good as their job.
If someone asks me, I tell them. I get paid fairly for my level of education, experience, certifications. I live in a wage transparency state. This really shouldn’t be a big deal. And frankly, it has worked to my advantage in the past: many years ago, someone terribly incompetent in their job and wildly over paid for it bragged to everyone daily about how much they were making per year. I took that number to my boss and asked would it be possible to revisit my salary in light of the disparity in the department and I brought all the receipts for all the projects I was managing all the money I was saving the apartment, etc. and ended up with a 30% raise mid year. I never had to say that I might consider looking elsewhere – I loved that company and the people I worked with, but I think they understood that was a retention opportunity.
I think more can be gained for everyone by being open about compensation. Companies benefit from their employees being afraid to compare notes and advocate for themselves.
That’s why you don’t talk about money with your co workers they use is as leverage towards you.
