How do you guys get through reading cases in their entirety? For years this has been a struggle for me and I still haven’t figured it out. I always jump around and pick and choose and then stress because I didn’t digest the entire thing. When I actually have fully read and digested entire cases I feel so much better but I don’t know how to turn that focus on and off

I have taken to copy and pasting cases section by section into chatgpt and asking it to "revise the prose into clear readable bullet points in plain language, without eliminating any substantive content." This makes it easier to get through the cases and know what they're about and then if they're relevant to what you need, it's easier to then dive into the actual initial prose

I get easily overwhelmed by details and chaotic facts/rules. This method works for me:

I print the case and read it with a pen (not a highlighter). I follow the facts section carefully and make notes in the margins about parties and key facts and procedure. I then read the argument without making too many marks on the paper. The key here is let the brain find the important information, not your pen or highlighter.

Once you read 4-5 cases on a topic, you can almost skim them because the legal analysis often follows the same pattern. So then it’s more pattern recognition.

It’s usually the first few cases will be very hard to get through until you understand what’s important and any special concepts or words.

Make an outline. If the court is breaking down different issues it can help to segment them visually to keep it from getting jumbled.

Thank you everyone! How long would you say is a reasonable time it takes to get through 1, e.g., 12-page case?

like

12 pages could take over an hour, and even more if there are terms or other cases it cites to that I have to look up. I read slowly at first but then can speed through remaining cases.

Appreciate this ❤️

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.

One of the things that my ADD coach helped me with was realizing that I wasn’t prioritizing activities that help me feel recharged. Between work and home responsibilities, I was just burnt out and overwhelmed.

So now when I start to get burned out I focus on reducing auditory overwhelm, getting outside, listen to music, get comfortable, read a fun book, etc.

As we’re heading into the weekend, what are some things you do to recharge and give yourself a break?
