This! Because one thing about me, I’m not going to beg for a promotion!
Seething silently while filling out job applications. Missing out on a promotion is a gut punch. Unless I think there's a good chance of me landing one in short order (usually not the case), I'm mentally checking out and looking for my next role.
It’s hard not to take it personally, especially when you’ve been showing up and giving your all. I gave myself a day to feel it, then asked my manager gently what I could do to grow into the next level. Sometimes it’s timing, sometimes it’s politics, but your worth isn’t tied to one title. What’s one thing you’ve done recently that you’re proud of, even if they didn’t notice? When you know these answers, you can plan to get the next promotion.
I wouldn't call it begging, but I would still check in with management before jumping ship entirely. I know how frustrating it is to see a peer getting promoted, and feeling like you got skipped over, but I've learned that what's in store for me, might be even better than that promotion I was crying over. Something greater is on the way 🙏
In 11+ years I’ve been promoted internally, exactly twice. Neither were title promotions. I was just being taken slightly less advantage of by the agencies who gave me raises after a couple years of working my ass off.
Externally, however, I’ve made leaps and bounds each time I went to a new agency.
Not the best climate to do this right now, but start working on where you’re going next.
I quit
I smile and pretend I’m fine. Then I continue to kind of do my job while looking for another job. I don’t wanna burn a bridge or find myself unemployed, but I’m not staying there.
