I always focused on the positive side so I didn’t notice how the toxic stuff was getting to me. So I didn’t notice it until the symptoms were too much to ignore. I was crying when I picked up my work phone. I dreaded going to work daily. My friends asked me when I was going to quit my job. Even when I was on vacation, I was crying about work and having work stress dreams. I just assumed the problem was me, until I literally could not function anymore.
Do you live in fear?
Isolating. Competitive. High turnover or people getting stealthed. Lack of self-awareness, vision, or strategy from senior management. All of those things were present at my prior firm, and lateraling was the best decision. Ultimately, if you make a list of positives/negatives and the latter is substantially longer, it's probably time to consider a change.
Feeling isolated and targeted at the same time. Feedback that seems to be sideways and not direct. Dreading going to work. Feeling a great sense of unease about work. Feeling anxious about work to the point it affects your sleep. High turnover of associates/counsel/partners. Hearing about multiple stealth layoffs.
if you're already wondering that may be a sign 👀
When the firm is missing entire class years of associates, sign number one! Also when you start interviewing and they say oh you’re another “X firm refugee” or when they ask “what’s going on at X firm we have been getting a lot of applications”
