I don't, not one bit. Work is done at that point. Boundaries.
Pros and cons here, but I grabbed a nanny for the last 4 hours of the day to put my girls down. This leaves me energized with my kids in the morning. Also note I'm a single dad so my solution may not be applicable across the board
This is one of the reasons I am looking to exit consulting. Long work day followed by usual bedtime meltdowns. I am mentally done at that point and the last thing I want to do is get back to doing work. Major kudos to those that are able to do it.
It's tough. I toss on my noise canceling headphones, play some upbeat music, and churn for an hour or 2.....or I just go to bed and realize that killing ourselves isn't worth it.
I save all the tedious tasks (admin stuff) until after bedtime. Get a movie going on one screen, work on the other. If I have to do heavier work, I’ll push through it right after bedtime, then log off right after.
Sure, if I could find a similarly interesting job that pays this well, but I haven’t yet. And honestly it’s better than others who aren’t home at all or grinding straight through (which I did before at a bigger firm).
I don't have any great answers here, but just wanted to say I definitely relate to this.
I stopped working at night for the most part. I’ll do maybe one night a week where my wife handles bedtime and I just work. Other than that I leave my laptop in my office and just decompress on the couch.
Rarely work now after putting the kids to bed. I’ll wake up extra early if I have something that absolutely needs to get done prior to the start of the next day. I’m spent after working all day and then going through the ringer of bed time. Still getting good reviews so I guess maybe those late evening hours weren’t that essential after all...
I usually kind of roll into it. Sit on the couch, watch some news and start with the easier tasks first.
I have a hard time and typically have more on my list than I can manage to get done. It’s why I almost always feel behind lately, but I also know at a certain point I’ll need to double check anything I actually do get done.
I use to sit with my laptop in their room with Edelweiss and Puff the majic dragon playing.
