“Help them get it” seems like solid advice. Wouldn’t you like some help when you would be in their situation?
Do a mini writers room with them? Kick some things around and feedback live. An hour or two could save you many.
If they’re being protective instead of objective, your CDs have a personal bias toward this person, and you may find yourself out of a job if you continue to complain about them. If you want to, go to someone higher up and give them quantifiable reasons you can’t work with this person (ie the triple hours). Although from my experience this might not work because corporate politics.
I’m also leaning this direction. Based on how they answered, it seems your CDs favor this person and/or have vested interest in their success.
Instead of fighting this, I would indeed put it on your ECDs radar, and KEEP TRACK of the times you have to give this person extra attention and what you’re having to walk them through.
