How do you respond when they say it’s their “best offer” right away? Is negotiating still on the table? Not sure how to navigate.

I do think you can still try and negotiate, especially if it's not an offer you would be willing to accept. Perhaps you adjust your demand slightly but just because tehy're saying that from the start doesn't mean there is zero wiggle room.

like

Why would you care if they win anything in the negotiation? They've already demonstrated that they don't see themselves as anything but the winner.. Remember, no matter how much you're paid, you're always underpaid if you work for someone else.

As a general rule, your ability to negotiate is as strong as your leverage. If you are a genuinely strong candidate who can add value on day one and are willing to walk away from the offer, ask for your worth.

Conversely, if I didn't have any other irons in the fire and really needed this job, especially knowing that many industries are employer markets right now, I might be inclined to accept the offer as is.

like

It can be hard to gauge. Do you like this company? Do you need the job right now? I suggest, do a little more research. See what type of salaries they are offering for this or other positions you may aspire to. Might have to dig a little but, this info is out there. Also, believe in you. Let them know what value you will add to this position or company, your commitment, your assets. Ask about other compensation(al) benefits, 401(k)
Health insurance
401(k) matching- go for percent higher
Paid time off
Vision insurance
Dental insurance
Pet Insurance
Life Insurance
Time Negotiations (come in later, leave earlier, 1/2 day Friday?)
Just ideas. How does this job feel in your gut, heart? If you get nowhere and feel it's good anyway, take it. At least they will know you value yourself and are a go-getter. Good luck.

Tell them you have another offer coming in and if they can’t meet your demands, you need some time to see how that offer looks before you can accept theirs.

likesmart

When you get the offer, you make it clear that you appreciate the offer and love the company, but you are looking for $X over their offer. As you are waiting on another offer from a company you like less, you need to take some time to consider the two offers. If they were able to get closer to your number, you can accept now, and you can tell the other company you’re out.

likesmart

You can always negotiate, even when they say no. You can negotiate other things other than pay. You can talk about flexibility, PTO, and extra benefits.

likesmart

I appreciate it. I do think this count as positives if they do agree with it. It sorta shows they really like me for the job.

like

It sounds like they’re not really open to negotiation, however you can certainly try. Especially if their offer is too low or otherwise a nonstarter. But it could risk the chances of them rescinding the offer.

like

That's always the risk at this or any stage but it doesn't mean that you can't counter their offer. Negotiations are key and also show them your confidence and that you know your worth. So, go for it and ask what you want. In Dutch we say: ask because you already have a 'not, so try get the yes! ;)

It’s an employers market right now. Take it or leave it if they’re not budging. Maybe try for other perks like more PTO if they won’t give more $.

That’s a good idea. Would have to compare and weigh out the pros and cons.

Good approach.

Take it or refuse. Those are the only options. I’m not sure what is there to navigate, it cannot be more clear

like

OH yes it CAN!

I think the best you could do is to try to probe around and see if it looks like there's any possible flex. Saying something like you were hoping for more might elicit a somewhat positive reaction. But, in today's job market companies can lowball with impunity, so it might just be the case that they can't be budged.

Ademola Afolabi - true. I think that’s also an appropriate approach.

"It's their best offer, it's not my best offer"

like

That’s a good way to see it!

you either accept it or you refuse it it’s your choice, doesn’t hurt to try to go a little bit more, but you may have it rescinded completely. That’s where you have your choice whether to accept it or not best of luck.

like

That’s tough and it would be unfortunate if it was a good job that I really wanted.

I would still try to negotiate but agree with the others that this might be a sign they aren’t willing to negotiate

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?
