LinkedIn search for the person who had the title you're going into previously and message them to see if they can shed light. Worked for me at least. Can't hurt
You can ask them
I wouldn't work for a place that punished people for asking this question. Everyone knows that you trade comp for free time when you go in house.
How big is the in house legal department? If it’s lean and your role is broad, might not be that chill. Also can ask indirectly by asking how they utilize outside counsel and to what extent

Ask them about their day to day, what does crunch time look like.
Also, if anyone has younger children (if they’re flexible, they’ll say that they leave early for pick up)
Ask if it’s a global role and how calls are handled across time zones, ask what they like to do outside work, etc. Most places that will let you have a life outside work should be pretty forthcoming about how it’ll be an improvement for you as a selling point.
F!
Look online to see if the same position is open annually or more often by looking at job old posts
I find them all the time using google! Searching broadly some sites dont update and you can original posting date
I’ve asked directly during interviews
