If you’ve been in litigation this long, I’d imagine you know a few mediators. Take them to coffee and ask them about it.
I’ve thought of asking some of the more successful ones if they’d like a partner - as in I’d work with them, take cases they’re unavailable for while I build experience, and give them a percentage of whatever I make that arises out of the affiliation. Everyone in my line of work hates to use new mediators so it seems like there are very much the “haves” (as in “have a ton of mediation business”) and the “have nots.”
For those who no experience as judges, I’ve noticed almost all good mediators have some mediation certificate or LLM. Maybe that’s step 1?
Did I write this and forget that I wrote it? This, and the comments/suggestions, sums up my current state of mind well. Good luck.
