Hopefully, the intention isn’t to make it that overwhelming, even though I can understand it does. I just tell myself they are doing it because they care about the work I am doing and want to be helpful. Is that always the case? No, but it does make me feel better.

I guess that depends on how it feels, whether it's a good faith effort to coach you or an effort to micromanage and antagonize you. I would like to be charitable and assume the managing director was just making sure you were getting things started off properly. But a good manager would give you space to do your work and not try to make it into a high-pressure situation.
I can definitely relate. I had a director do that once and I felt like every click of my keyboard was being judged. It is tough to stay calm when someone is breathing down your neck. How do you personally cope?
