I'm glad that trade schools are becoming more recognized. It will make a stronger work force in the future.

We desperately need people to choose trades, we all need plumbers, electricians, and mechanics. These trades make the world go round, and we need to find better ways of supporting students who decide to pursue those fields.
Trades are suffering right now. Past years all the focus was on degrees. So naturally, most kids got out of school and went into a four year or longer degree program and the trades suffered. We need a balance. Not everyone can work in corporate, and we need great, skilled workers to keep the grid together.

Exactly, so how do we shift the pendulum back?
I worked in our Alternative program for 3 years before it closed. That was almost 21 years ago, so no our district no longer has an Alt program. We do, however, have an entire trade school program where kids can take a variety of classes related to the trades. Students go for 3 hours in the morning or 3 hours in the afternoon, and they get bussing. The students have to be a Junior or Senior to sign up.

I am glad that our corporation is more supportive of trades now. I make sure that when I am talking to my students about future plans and goals, I emphasize that there are more options than just college.

I think this is the key, starting with career day, we need to educate students on all different paths, what they cost and how quickly you can earn from them.
Every year, the district hosts a big career fair that includes representatives from colleges, universities trade schools. This is a great opportunity for students to explore different career paths and see what kind of training they might need.
