Likely because they think your comp expectations will be too high. Startups generally will not compensate well in initial stages, with comp structured more towards private equity stakes and positively correlate with larger growth and revenue.
How do you structure your resume, do you emphasize that you are highly motivated to switch paths and looking for a change?
It will help to talk about the skills you will bring to the table and that startups are looking for.
Things like budgeting, coaching and leadership. Ability to raise revenue, boost efficiency, and lower costs. Bringing in new clientele by x amount x months through strategy of service streamlining, sales training, outreach, and marketing. Increased revenue x amount per year through outreach campaign.
Startups want people they can leverage either for their skills or connections. From the motivational side you can show or highlight things which show you have an interest, such as attending entrepreneurial networking meetings or ideally experience with startups.
How are you getting connected to opportunities? A 10% hit rate from random linkedin job postings is actually pretty good.
If you’re not already, try and get a recruiter or two to work with you. They’ll connect you with roles that fit your resume, and help advocate for you to get at least R1 interviews
PE recruiters I worked with shot me strat roles once in a while. Just tell them that’s your primary focus.
