^I'd have left immediately once partner blocked the move. Fuck working for a firm that doesn't work with you to achieve your goals. The employment proposition should be mutual beneficial to both parties, not just the employer.
Do you "need" or "want" to move? Makes a big difference on how you should approach.
As a manager, I expressed interest in another group and office. Partner blocked it and said I was too valuable. Upon making SM a few years later and after starting a family, I was told that I couldn't make partner without moving (partner knew I couldn't move at that stage of my life). In his mind, he would have me or no one would. I was his chattel...but no more.
No longer with the firm. In industry making considerably more. Specialized tax and in a very unique role at a very large private company.
We don't always get what we want even though we really want it.
So the word is if they say no find a new job ?!? Let me start updating my resume
At associate level it is hard to find an office with a need so that's a legit claim. You can find another job or wait till senior. But even at senior, need still plays a key role in deciding whether you can transfer
Seeing that my fiancé is in another state .. I'm not waiting .. goes to update LinkedIn and resume as I said .. but they are hiring like crazy in the office I want to move too .. so I guess wait and see
They overhired everywhere
I'm in the same situation! I asked for a transfer within the same region for the summer back in January to be with my then fiancé now HUSBAND and still haven't heard back. At this point, I've started to look for jobs. I follow up frequently with HR and they've been giving me attitude. I do well and I never ask for anything. I know of 3 other people who transferred who got approved and received an offer within the same month, but I cant seem to get anywhere AND they've asked me to interview with 2 people from that office. I've only heard this for transfers to other regions. Anyway, I heard it has to do with if partners vouch for you or your counselor pushes too. Unluckily for me, my counselor sucks.
For a new job .. grrr
@TA1 what happened after no room for partner in your office? Are you still with thefirm?
I am currently in same position where I asked for transfer for no open position in the office I want to go to. It's surprising when in a big firm they cannot absorb a resource at consultant or senior level. I understand manager or higher may be difficult. Good luck though!
I need relocation to a specific place due to personal reasons.
Hr said " I know with or without a transfer your gonna go anywAy " .. so after that I'm kinda like they not gonna give it to me .. I'm even willing to change type of clients because they don't have my group in the new location and have voiced this with career coach and everything .. it's bullshit ,. So you'd rather have some new person over someone who's been with the company a year and half.. over this place tho so I may need the fresh start
I totally agree with you AOP. After company invests how can they just let the resource walk away. It is beyond me
Right EY2. Like a little bit goes a long way .. but they are the first ones to say generation X will not stay st a job longer than some many years. This is why.. I shouldn't have to push off a wedding because y'all don't wanna transfer me ..
Which group are you in and which city do you want to transfer to?
to charlotte , healthcare/employee benefits/tax ...
Charlotte is a good choice! I'm not sure about the availability in tax there. Good luck anyways!
