I’m of the mindset that if you feel confident with what you’re wearing you’ll always feel effortless to everyone around you. You can start small as well, like finding a statement pair of shoes to bring some fun into your look will make even basics feel more curated and polished.
Looking into my kibbe type and paying attention to what colours and tones suit me best really upped my confidence level and I started getting way more compliments.
Pretty important imo.. at least as a creative. We’re supposed to be UTD on culture and the latest trends, which includes personal style (imo). You don’t need to be making it onto fashion blogs or being stopped on the street by people asking what you’re wearing, but you should look the part.
I don’t think you need to dress accordingly to what’s trendy. That immediately comes off as inauthentic. The biggest flex is having a strong sense of personal style. Check out Allison Bornstein’s videos on IG/TikTok (her book is great too!) oh how to find your own personal style. And @oldloserinbrooklyn for some edgier fashion inspiration, if that’s up your alley
As a creative if you are put together you generally get a pass. Second the advice about having a good piece, maybe it’s shoes, a necklace, glasses, etc.
I would recommend being careful about overdoing it though…I see a lot of folks who come off as trying too hard to be relevant, maybe they really are that tuned in but the quick read is they are just following trends and maybe have a little too much time on their hands.
The best creatives I’ve worked with just wear what they feel good in. Some wear blue jeans and a t-shirt. Some all black. Some trendy. Some moody grunge. Whatever is authentic to their personality. Your clothes don’t make great ideas and deliver craft, and that’s all that matters IMO.
Dress for the job you want! That said, if you're a creative, dress like the creative you are in your head!! I like to approach my wardrobe like a mini creative challenge once a week. The outfits I like out of that get added to my regular rotation!
Always dress to honor the work. You don’t want to not be taken seriously.
