If you’re in public accounting it’s likely not allowed.
It’s rewarding, but No life for 3 months…
A few thoughts:
Assuming you want to be legit and you have your IRS PTIN, required number of education credits, and EFIN, you will also need a business office - even if you work remotely, unless you want your home address as your public business address.
How many clients do you have to start? Is that enough to cover your expenses? What tax software are you going to use? How much does it cost? Do you fully understand it? How much are you going to charge your clients? What forms of payment will you accept? Do you have a secure system? How will you protect clients’ privacy and information?
Are you working at another job while doing this? How will your hours be affected? How much time do you have to devote to tax preparation? Tax preparers make the vast bulk of their annual income for the year in 3 1/2 months. Those months are insanely busy.
Noncompete clauses are pretty much not applicable anymore, but non poaching clauses are still enforceable. How will you get your clients? Your title is Accounting Manager, Don’t assume that you’ll start with your company’s clients if you work for an accounting firm.
If working legit isn’t important, you’re on your own. The consequences are too severe.
It’s not a part time job unless you are doing returns people can do themselves. Tax laws change all the time.
