How long did it take you to feel integrated after lateraling? Started about two months ago and still feel SO isolated. Makes me miss my old firm even though I know I left for good reasons.

7 months in and more integrated work wise but still socially feeling more isolated than everyone whose been working together for years. Takes time

like

Same. I’m 7 months in as well and just now starting to get consistent work.

Are you wfh or in office most days? Being in office really does things up for me. I’ve lateraled twice, the first time I was in one day a week and it took about a year to feel comfortable with everyone. This time, I’m in five days a week and four months in, I feel pretty well settled.

I’d also make sure you’re talking to the paralegals and assistants. They tend to be friendlier and that makes the whole environment feel warmer.

like

I’m in 3 days a week most weeks. But even when I come in, I literally don’t interact with anyone all day—all of my meetings are virtual even if others in the office are attending.

As A1 said, it takes time to integrate socially and get on the same level of familiarity with people who've been working together a long time. As far as general integration and getting staffed up, have you been reaching out to people in and outside of your practice group for coffee, lunches, etc.? People are busy and unless you have a dedicated integration partner, getting plugged in with the right people and making sure you are top of mind is sort of something you have to take personal ownership of (for better or worse).

like

Work wise, a few months. Socially, still getting there but it’s improving by the day.

I think I’m dispositionally slow to warm up, but it took me a year to feel like I was turning a corner, and now at 1.5 years I feel fully part of the team.

End of my 6th year

Same feeling here. Have you been busy ever?

like

I’ve been billing 35-45 hours a week but a lot of that has been kind of mindless doc review

like

4 months to start feeling apart of the firm and probably 8 months total to feel fully integrated!

like

It takes at least 6 months but more likely a year to really feel settled

like

I felt pretty much like a part of the team by the end of month 2 but these comments are making me feel delusional lol. I did choose this group specifically for friendly vibes and good integration. It probably helped in my case that a lot of the senior associates and partners were also laterals within the last 2-3 years.

I have a coworker who keeps spouting comparative odds and situations in regards to the safety of the vaccine. Such as: you're twice as likely to get hit by lightening than have blod clots from JJ. As a mid-senior level associate in litigation/investigations/arbitration, do you feel like what you’re currently doing is actually holding you back in terms of professional/personal development? We spend so much time going over the nittiest and grittiest of details that I feel like I’m not actually learning anything new anymore or expanding my skill set. I work in a super lean team and as a 6th year I’m still doing a lot of the grunt work. Is this normal?

Do you think partners in law firms have too much power and autonomy? eg. the power to refuse leave, to do your annual appraisal, to make you work while on leave, to overwork people, to manage the team on their on terms etc. Is this power bad or good for the firm and the team overall?

Related question - Do you think the HR in law firms are just there for show since the partners have a lot of power and autonomy?

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

I’m a first year that’s inching toward second year. Partners in my group say “sometimes getting thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn.” However, I feel so lost. I feel like saying the above is just an excuse for not wanting to take the time to actually teach new associates.
