Also possible that they speak from the experience of how they learnt and how satisfying that was. The instances I learned the most were those free swimming exercises. The important thing about this is that this is not meant as you having to sink if you cannot figure it out but as an encouragement - if we want to stay with the figurative speaking - to move as far along the high wire as possible and to see the partner or senior as a safety net and not as someone you expect to take the next step.
Mentor
Ask midlevels and seniors to fill in gaps. Preferably ones on your deal but you can still connect with others for quick questions.
And yes, some partners use this as an excuse (and model for others) that training is not their problem. This is unfortunate. Not all firms are like this.
