How long does it take for associates to make partner at Gibson Dunn? Is there an option to become counsel instead?

8-10yr? Counsel should be purgatory phase only, unless you have some leverage to request and get, or you are needed but not indispensable?

Depends on group, some are at year 13-15, the shorter ones are 10 ish.

Some recruiter sent us an email recently, she’d crunched the numbers. The average this year was 12 years. Our official partner window starts at 7. The most junior person this year was c/o 2017.

To the second question: yes. The firm is not up or out. You can make counsel and hang out for an indefinite amount of time. You can also make counsel and later make partner - there’s been a couple of people in the last few years who got promoted after spending a decade plus as counsel.

I am a mid level and have received an offer from a regional big law firm in a non-market paying location. I believe the firm would be a great fit and the location is where I want to be. The biggest issue is money. I’d be lateraling from full cravath in a major market and the initial offer I received is a bit off that (read: 50% salary reduction). While the market is cheaper in some respects, housing is not. How far can I expect this firm to go to in terms of compensation? Any negotiation tips?

Think it is funny how recruiters seem to think the vague description "national market paying firm in X city" is at all enticing to one already at a national market paying firm in X city. We're kind of already there, maybe it would help you get us to actually bite if you had anything slightly special to emphasize

There were substantial layoffs at firm and management has denied, saying they were performance related (mostly bullshit). They have not ruled out [further] layoffs in the future.

I don’t want to lose my job, and it would absolutely suck. But I almost feel numb and hard to even get too worked up over the prospect given how emotionally exhausting this year has been. Maybe bcz I feel somewhat safe, but I feel like if it happens, it does, and I’ll find a way to recover/move on.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?
