However much you can light on fire and not miss. I buy to wear so don’t care about resale value (other than for negotiating discounts or identifying something to buy preowned vs new). Luxury goods are things you don’t need but bring you more joy than the alternatives you could buy
Having a decent collection of Rolexes, I’m realizing how under appreciated omegas are. Just got a Speedmaster and I love it. Next will look at a seamaster. Great value for what you get, fun to wear, and generally hold their value.

I don’t think there’s a set amount, it’s relative to what you’re comfortable with. My first watch was $1,700 and my next one was a $10k submariner.
Buy what you can afford, and are comfortable with. Don’t overextend for a watch.
If you’re paying $4-5k, buy one that retains its value. A used watch in that range that doesn’t depreciate is not wild.

Unless you’re intended to approach this in a “one and done” way or you aren’t too fussy, I’d spend a smaller amount unless 4-5k to you is nothing. A lot of peoples tastes change dramatically since their first watch.
I started off with a citizen eco drive then a titanium seiko, ceramic seiko, seiko 5 field watch and then a Hamilton khaki before finally diving into an omega 300m. Throw in a couple no name fashion watches too lol. I would start with a micro, tissot, Hamilton or seiko for under $800 and get a feel for what you like before spending thousands.
