Nanny shares present a nice, more affordable option if you desire a nanny. Plus there is built in socialization for your little one. Finding a family you jive with and a nanny you love might be tricky, but it’s doable.
FWIW, there is no “better” option between daycare and nanny - just a solution that fits your needs and makes you the most comfortable. There is a lot to be said for the flexibility of a nanny (vs snow days & sick days). There is an equal amount to be said for the education and socialization of daycare.
Costs are soul crushing either way. Daycare is likely $2500-3500/mo (maybe more), a nanny is more. Not sure a nanny share.
I can not say enough good about my daughters daycare in Financial District. She’s been there since she was 3-months old (single mom)... she’s developed incredible confidence, has learned more than I could ever give her (all care givers are teachers with a focused curriculum) and I’ve made amazing mom friends.
It starts out more expensive as an infant (I think it’s $3100/month) then goes down as they age... it’s $2100/month now and that includes breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and a weekly music class (or soccer depending on the season).
Highly recommend daycare for socialization and the education. If you are in fidi shoot me a note and I can share more!
Nanny will be around $800-1,000/week. More if you are hiring a highly educated nanny. Daycare can be anywhere from $1500-4000/month ranging from small in-home (cheaper) to yuppie such as Bright Horizons. Nanny share is slightly more expensive than nanny, but split btwn 2 people. FWIW, if you have an extra bedroom you can get an au pair. $400/week total plus room and board.
We pay $2000/month for an in home family daycare in brooklyn for 50h/week
You probably already know this but check as many local daycares as you can and get on those waitlists! Some are truly years long. Madness.
Though your timing is good. Lots of daycares “move kids up” to their new classroom in Sept (to keep w school schedules) and so early fall openings are the most likely.
Honestly you just have to start calling places to get accurate prices because a lot of places have an increase annually. I’m in BK and pay $450/week. The corporate ones usually ask you to come in for a short tour. In-house will usually quote you over the phone.
I second calling and visiting as many daycares as possible. In Manhattan, nannies typically cost $25 /hr and get 2 weeks paid vacation and sick days. Daycare is definitely a more affordable option but aren’t as convenient for some families (i.e. strict cut off times for pickup, won’t accept kid if they’re sick, snow days, etc) There are trade offs with either option. I don’t know as much about nanny sharing except that if you find a another family that you mesh with, it could be the best of both worlds.
Google is giving me outdated and conflicting information. How much can I actually expect to pay when I go back to work? Is a Nanny or Nanny-Share a better option than a daycare? Any advice/ input would is welcome.
Havas has a subsidized day care program they just announced with Vivvi across the street. It’s incredibly affordable and covers 7am-7pm. I think HR should have the details but if not you can just email Vivvi and ask them. They came in and did a presentation to the office a few weeks ago.
These are actually really good prices. Good for Havas, hopefully they push other agencies to do the same.
