40 year old v10 first year here. Both of my parents are high school dropouts and alcoholics, brother is a heroin addict. My chances of getting here were slim to none. So, you could say I’m pretty proud.

I was a 32 year old first year once.

I started at 30, became partner at 40 and have now been practicing law over 30 years. It’s never to late!

Thank you!

I had a 40+ year old vet as my first year. It’s a little bit awkward delegating but you get used to it. She definitely had a great attitude.

We have a few in their mid-30s. Usually some of the best associates in their year, although I feel guilty about asking them to do junior BS like checklists and redlines.

No! Keep asking us. We want to learn. Just don't be a jerk about it. Lol!

Patent attorneys tend to be on the older side (I know several people who were 30+ as first years), as folks may have had first careers in tech or pharma, and/or went to law school after PhDs.

like

Exactly. I’m in this camp. Not uncommon to see 30-40 year old first years in patent practices.

I’m 30…

I had a law school classmate in their 40s who ended up in BigLaw. I never asked exactly how old he was, but he was a career changer.

like

35.

I know someone who will start fall 2022 who’s pushing 40.

I have heard of patent agents doing part-time law school and then coming in as 3rd year associates after they graduate... maybe this is the only exception?

35year old 1st year in biglaw, I grew up in a low-income family in a developing country. My parents’ combined income was lower than $150 per month when I was young.
People around me always feel sorry for me since I need to give up ten years of experience in a foreign country and start as a 1st year.
But I feel that I am lucky to earn the money that my parents have never dreamed of.

35, but she definitely looks younger than that.

🤢

53(??) … she graduated undergrad 4 yrs before I was born (and I was giving her work)

I was 37. It was fine.

Also, see a partner who went to law school ten years after graduating from Yale. But he grew fast and became a partner in his sixth year in biglaw.

I quit my previous job approximately 5-6 months ago due to toxic culture and being pressured to commit fraud… I fear hiring managers see that I’ve been out of work for this time and may assume I was fired or laid off. Additionally I’ve had a couple interviews where company “X” interviewers have commented on this and in an effort to not bad mouth my previous employer I’m stuck with a generic answer like I want to take my career to the next level with Company “X.” Any thoughts/advice?

I said that sounded awesome and the thought of someone else having to take on some responsibilities was such a relief… so why do I feel competitive and threatened now that the senior associate has actually been added? 🙄

Is it worth asking for a pay raise if you know you are leaving the firm soon? Coming up on my one year at a firm.
