Not sure if this is mentioned in your presentation, but it would be worth pointing out positives / what is going well because your manager may think you are only focusing on the negatives or areas of improvement. Make sure the presentation provides balance and not be too judgmental because they may have been decisions made at the time that you don’t have the full context of, which explains why certain processes have been done a certain way.
Im seeing a few yellow flags here on your end
- you know he’s not happy with it but you’re not expressing curiosity about why
- was the assignment to share areas of improvement? Maybe you could have balanced the positive and negative. Don’t you think if his new hire is saying how bad things are, that might reflect on him negatively? Be sensitive
- there are few insights in your area: maybe you should have gone deeper there
- you’re blaming the wide net process which I assume that he suggested, but you could have negotiated to get a more relevant outcome.
In other words you’re not acting mature or experienced and he may be frustrated. I would get humble and curious and sensitive. And then iterate. Set up time to review a good end in mind goal. Then prepare to redo it.
Really appreciate this!
For example, there has been a massive problem discovery effort. I was told to read through all of it. My conclusion was: there are very few insights in my area, because the interviews were casting the net too widely, and I would like to proceed with focus on my specific area.
I also provided feedback that while our strategic pillars are great, we also need strategic goals.
I mentioned that in every organisation before we had a roadmap at least a year ahead, not just a quarter.
I’m supposed to present this next week… what can I put into the presentation in order to not be an a**hole?
