They tied bonuses to RTO. So that’s an automatic no for me, dawg.

That’s one way to bring people back to the office 😳
The consensus here is that Ropes sucks
Oh no, which aspects specifically? Thinking of lateraling.

What is Chatgpt? I’m not a junior associate. How else do you recommend I should’ve asked?
Aside from the terrible ways that management has operated this year (RTO, docking bonuses), I still find that most of the people here are brilliant and incredibly kind (though this is of course practice group specific). If you care about your job and do good work, people notice and will go to bat for you. There generally aren’t assholes at Ropes.

It’s very old school boomer with dated art and decor. Very much pilgrim.

I wasn’t so impressed with the website. It was outdated but with a flash of “we’re trying to be cool”.
I work at ropes and love it; I found great mentors and really like the work I do. As with any firm it’s practice group specific. Yes you have to come in three days a week but I don’t see it as the end of the world people are complaining about. Also if you read any of the messages from firm management, it was clear RTO was required and there would be consequences. Maybe they didn’t explicitly say a bonus would be docked but aren’t we old enough to understand that if something is required, and you don’t do it, there will be consequences?
Not at Ropes. Never have been. But I work with them a lot. And I think very highly of that firm. I know Ropes takes a lot of punches, here. But from my vantage point, the lawyers are excellent, it’s among the most collaborative, the associates seem to like it.
Yeah the RTO stuff is just psychotic and is giving the firm a much worse reputation than it deserves imo. Even with that I would say I am afraid to lateral somewhere else with a worse culture.
If you’re on a visa in the US, they have been known to screw people over the H1B lottery and firing first years (rather than transferring them to London or another overseas office for a year, like they promised) who don’t get selected in the visa lottery. TBF Fried Frank has done this as well but this is unusual practice for a top firm.
I couldn’t agree with this more. Had several friends who were impacted by visa and green card processes
