I’d imagine a more likely scenario is: the dogs run out when people are coming and going, not because the front door is propped wide open, and then the dogs see a shiny object (squirrel! Bird! Cat! Another dog!), chase after it for a couple blocks, then can’t find their way back.
It’s bizarre you find it bizarre. Use your creative brain.
It all depends on the dog. Some dogs go on little adventures and come back. Some dogs will take off and just keep running. A lot depends on the breed. Huskies are notorious escape artists. Hound dogs will follow a scent as far as they can.
I currently have a foster dog that loves to escape and sneak out doors. No clue why - she’s got a great cozy home here, but it seems to just be in her DNA to try to sneak out. Like someone else said, most people aren’t just leaving their doors wide open. Dogs can be sneaky, and accidents happen.
And time of year has a lot to do with it. My 2 labs would always come home in the summer. They’d leave, get into water somewhere and came home…Always no doubt about it. The relied on the scent as well as direction.
They got out one time in the winter when it snowed. It messed them up bc the scent was gone. We had to get our close friends and search for them. We found our dogs like 2-3 miles away. Took them to the vet bc the young one was in shock. He kept them for observation but they were fine. 😬
Rising Star
My parents' dog got out when a lawn care worker accidentally left the gate open. He did actually return a few hours later and was barking at their garage door like why aren't you letting me in people. I don't know how common that is though.
Dogs don’t run away. Ever. They get lost. They get stolen. They get killed. And every one of these events happens because of carelessness.
Enthusiast
I have wondered that sometimes. In India, the dogs always come back home even if they are let out but that doesn’t seem to be the case here in the US and I can’t wrap my head around the reason behind it.
A couple of my dogs (2 labs) would have returned, bc they always got out together and returned together after taking off. We lived on 2 acres w 15 acres around us and a small swampy forest behind us. Yes, they’d come home full of mud and swamp water, exhausted and content lol
All of my other dogs, if got out were gone!
I’d also imagine it has to do with how often the dogs are able to be off leash at home. My dogs rarely can be off leash so when they get the chance they bolt and run off - but when growing up our family dogs regularly were outside off lease and they’d run to their favorite spot, do their business, then casually just walk around and check out whatever was happening until we called them back in
I agree with that but so many dogs in my area are running towards me and my 2 border collies and sometimes it’s very scary for n my dogs and my dogs love to play with other dogs but when those dogs are growling n barking it’s not safe, I have considered carry mace or something to scare them away, I have never in my life so many dogs running around
