I don’t have experience with the snow but there are salves and waxes like mushers paw wax that you could coat his paws with if you think his foot pads are sore. Most dogs do not like shoes but you could always try!
If what your dog is walking on is being salted, then yes, train them to use shoes. The salt is bad for their paws - it draws out moisture and chaps them, and the freezing temperatures make it even more damaging. The balms and stuff are good for protecting the paw while healing (assuming the dog doesn’t try to lick them).
I use the shoes and it works great. My dog is kind of sensitive and he got a yeast infection on his paw (ew) from licking it and introducing bacteria to the paw from his gross mouth
Try rinsing his paws and putting some coconut oil on or something. Hope the bud feels better
Shoes are good if they fit well. I personally just wipe my pup’s paws after every time we go outside and highly recommend doing that as a daily habit
Try the balloon boots. My dog hated all other types of shoes but seems to tolerate these
My dog hates shoes. Refuses to move if she has them on. So I wash her paws when we come back in, dry them, and apply mushers paw wax. Seems to work well for her
That mushers wax is good stuff!
Bought a $10 paw scrubber off Amazon for dirt and pollen/allergens. It works great, I noticed when we don't use it consistently, the dog will chew her paws more often

Apply Vaseline!
Shoes 100% work and recommended if you live in very cold or hot climates. There’s a training period but positive reinforcement and they eventually will get used to it
My dog licks their paws but it’s due to allergies.
